Choosing the Right Font

I see too many shirts on Amazon with fonts that do their shirt no justice. There is nothing wrong with text based designs, but you have to choose the right fonts. There are tens of thousands of fonts available for us to choose from. So how do we go about choosing the right font for our designs?

This is an open-ended topic, and there are various factors in selecting the right font. However, I personally believe that it comes down to what message you are trying to convey to your audience. We mentioned on the podcast that fonts have personalities. To be successful in your font selection match the personality of the font with the personality of the message.

For instance, look at the word “love” that is shown below. I wrote the word with the Arial font that we should all have on our computer. While it’s legible, it can certainly use a makeover to get a little more emotion out of the reader. So I retyped the word with the Great Vibes font, which is a script font and it makes the word more credible.

Just keep in mind that it depends on your design and the message. Are you making a shirt for kids or are you making a shirt for a corporate business? These two examples are vastly different, and you wouldn’t use the same fonts for them. As much as I hate it, Comic Sans would be more appropriate for the kid’s shirt. For the corporate design, I would use an elegant Serif font such as Garamond.
