Meaningless gestures
I guess one of the contributing factors to all these wonderful signals of virtue can be ascribed to the rize of technology.
Have all our technological gadgets and the information overload that follows in their wake left us mostly unthinking as a species. Has too much information interfered with our abilities to discern what is of value anymore?
As we drink from our firehouse how many of us take the time to stop and think deeply about most of the information that being thrown at us?
With so much to distract us it's hard to stop, disengage, think deeply and find what is of real value. With this in mind it's easy to see how the highly connected fall into the meaningless gesture trap. It seems wonderful and the right thing to do, but upon reflection it can be seen to do very little or nothing to solve the root cause and expedite the desired outcome.
