The Orange Thread

In the dust-choked fields of the Last Farm, only one thing still grew: a single, stubborn carrot.

Old Man Harkin had planted it the day the government declared crops extinct—just to spite them. "Ain't no world without carrots," he muttered, pressing the seed into the cracked earth like a secret.

Twelve-year-old Lissa watched it sprout. Watched it grow while the soil around it turned to powder. Its green fronds reached for the smog-choked sky like tiny, defiant hands.

Then the inspectors came.

"Unauthorized cultivation," they said, snapping on rubber gloves. "Contraband vegetation." They pulled it from the ground with a sickening snap.

But Lissa saw it first—the way the carrot bled orange instead of green. How its color deepened as they carried it away, glowing like embers in the gloom.

That night, she crept into their sterile lab and stole it back.

The next morning, the whole valley woke to a whisper of green at their doorsteps—tiny shoots pushing through concrete, through rusted cars, through the inspectors’ own boot prints.

And at the center of it all, half-buried in the dirt, lay the carrot—sprouted anew, its roots now stretching deeper than anyone could dig.
