Venezuela: What We Lived Through and How We Helped After the Double Earthquake

On June 24, our country was hit by a tragedy that changed the lives of thousands of families and friends.

Two powerful earthquakes shook Venezuela within seconds. Caracas and Miranda felt part of the impact, but La Guaira suffered the worst of this tragedy. In that state, the pain became especially visible: many buildings were damaged, families were forced out of their homes, people began sleeping in improvised spaces, and entire communities were left trying to understand how to move forward.

At first, as often happens during emergencies, the response from citizens was strong and immediate. There were many posts, many collection centers, and many people wanting to help. But as the days passed, attention began to fade.

And that is one of the hardest parts of any tragedy: when the world slowly starts moving forward, but the affected families still need food, water, medicine, hygiene products, blankets, and emotional support.

From our foundation, we have tried to do everything within our reach: to act with humanity, transparency, and presence. We are not a large international organization, and we know that. We are a small Venezuelan foundation, but with a very real commitment: making sure help reaches those who need it most.

What We Have Seen on the Ground

During our visits to the affected areas, especially in La Guaira, we have seen a very difficult reality: families who lost stability, people who do not know when they will be able to return to a safe home, and communities that still need basic support.

We have also seen something that has deeply moved us: the dignity of the people. Despite the pain, many continue helping one another. They share the little they have. They organize. They support each other. They do what Venezuelans know how to do best in difficult moments: stay united.

That is why we believe solidarity cannot fade away.

Our First Commitment: To Be Present

From Fundacoven, we organized ourselves with friends outside Venezuela and, thanks to direct contact, we were able to activate a support network to prepare and deliver aid directly.

We have worked on deliveries of:

• Individual food kits.
• Personal hygiene items.
• Drinking water.
• Basic medical supplies.
• Psychological support for families in vulnerable situations.
• Visits to assess needs and follow up with affected communities.
• Informational content to keep attention alive around the emergency.

Each delivery represents more than a bag or a product. It represents a way of telling a family: “You are not alone.”

What We Have Accomplished So Far

With the support received, we have been able to organize deliveries and prepare new humanitarian activities.

Our focus has been to maintain a constant presence, not to make one delivery and disappear.

We want to continue offering support over the next several weeks, responding to different needs:

• Hygiene.
• Blankets.
• Basic medicines.
• Direct support for affected families.

We have also worked to document the situation so that more people can understand that the emergency is not over.

The families are still there, and with them, their needs and their pain remain present.

Why Do We Keep Insisting?

Because after the first few days, many emergencies enter a silent stage, where the wave of cameras, posts, and attention begins to decrease. However, families are still sleeping outside their homes in tents, tarps, and improvised beds.

And those who lost loved ones continue carrying a pain that does not disappear with the passing of days. That is why we continue.

Because helping also means staying when others leave.

Venezuela: lo que vivimos y como apoyamos en el doble terremoto.

El 24 de junio nuestro país fue golpeado por una tragedia que cambió la vida de miles de familias y amigos.

Dos fuertes terremotos sacudieron el país en cuestión de segundos en donde Caracas y Miranda recibieron una parte del golpe y La Guaira recibió lo peor de esta tragedia. En este estado el dolor se volvió especialmente visible: hay muchisimos edificios afectados, familias fuera de sus hogares, personas durmiendo en espacios improvisados, comunidades enteras intentando entender cómo seguir adelante.

Al principio, como suele pasar en toda emergencia, la movilización masiva de ciudadanos fue evidente, muchas publicaciones, muchos centros de acopio y muchas manos queriendo ayudar. Pero con el paso de los días, la atención empezó a bajar.

Y ahí es donde comienza una de las partes más difíciles de cualquier tragedia: cuando el mundo empieza a seguir su curso pero las familias afectadas siguen necesitando comida, agua, medicinas, aseo, abrigo y acompañamiento.

Desde nuestra fundación hemos intentado hacer lo que está a nuestro alcance: actuar con humanidad, transparencia y presencia. No somos una gran organización internacional y eso lo saben. Somos una fundación venezolana pequeña, pero con un compromiso real: que la ayuda llegue a quienes más la necesitan.

Lo que hemos visto en campo

En nuestras visitas a zonas afectadas, especialmente en La Guaira, hemos visto una realidad muy dura en donde hay familias que perdieron estabilidad, personas que no saben cuándo podrán volver a una vivienda segura y comunidades que todavía necesitan apoyo básico.

También hemos visto algo que nos ha marcado profundamente: la dignidad de la gente. A pesar del dolor, muchos siguen ayudándose entre ellos. Comparten lo poco que tienen. Se organizan. Se acompañan y hacemos lo que mejor sabe hacer el venezolano; estar unidos en las situaciones criticas.

Y por eso creemos que la solidaridad no puede apagarse.

Nuestro primer compromiso: estar presentes

Desde Fundacoven nos organizamos con amigos fuera de Venezuela y gracias al contacto directo pudimos activar una red de ayuda para preparar y entregar ayuda directa.

Hemos trabajado en entregas de:

• Kits alimentarios unipersonales.
• Artículos de aseo personal.
• Agua potable.
• Insumos médicos básicos.
• Apoyo psicologico a familias en situación vulnerable.
• Visitas de diagnóstico y seguimiento en comunidades afectadas.
• Contenido informativo para mantener viva la atención sobre la emergencia.

Cada entrega representa más que una bolsa o un producto. Representa una forma de decirle a una familia: “No estás sola.”

Lo que hemos logrado hasta ahora

Con el apoyo recibido, hemos podido organizarnos para realizar entregas y preparar nuevas jornadas humanitarias.

Nuestro enfoque ha sido mantener presencia constante, no hacer una sola entrega y desaparecer.

Queremos sostener una ayuda progresiva durante varias semanas, atendiendo distintas necesidades:

• Alimentación.
• Hidratación.
• Higiene.
• Abrigo.
• Medicinas básicas.
• Apoyo directo a familias afectadas.

También hemos trabajado en documentar la situación para que más personas puedan entender que la emergencia no terminó.

Las familias siguen ahí y con ellas su necesidad y el dolor siguen presentes.

Estamos organizando nuevas jornadas durante las próximas semanas, enfocadas en entregas de:

• Kits de aseo personal.
• Agua potable.
• Cobijas.
• Insumos médicos básicos.
• Apoyo puntual a familias vulnerables.

La idea no es solo entregar productos, sino poder acompañarlos en todas las labores que se siguen desempeñando en la Guaira, asi como en los refugios habilitadosen dicha entidad.

¿Por qué seguimos insistiendo?

Porque después de los primeros días, muchas emergencias entran en una etapa silenciosa en donde el auge de camaras, publicaciones y atención empieza a disminuir. Sin embargo las familias siguen durmiendo fuera de sus casas en carpas o toldos con camas improvisadas.

Y quienes perdieron seres queridos siguen cargando un dolor que no se resuelve con el paso de los días. Por eso seguimos.

Porque ayudar también es quedarse cuando otros se van.
