Cuando escuchaba hablar del Cardenal Joseph Ratzinger la imagen mental que desarrollaba era la de un hombre resentido y frustrado, alguien que desde su autoridad imponía, castraba y limitaba el crecimiento de la fe católica. Un personaje que en vez de pastor era el rottweiler de Dios.

Entiendo que esa imagen la construí por prejuicio. Yo leía mucho a Tony de Mello y saber que el Cardenal Ratzinger había emitido una comunicación censurando sus enseñanzas, me parecía inaceptable, un ataque sin sentido y sobre todo una abuso. Además de ello, saberlo, un progresista que se hizo conservador para ascender en la carrera eclesiástica. Todo ello, sumado a lo que la prensa escribía, fueron agigantando mi rechazo.

Cuando lo nombraron Papa fue indiferente para mí. Mi aversión era tan grande que no aceptaba ninguna cercanía. Sin embargo, en el año 2005 todo cambió.

Recuerdo que estaba en una etapa de fuerte revisión. Mi cuestionamiento era profundo y doloroso. Nuevas perspectivas me inundaban y sacudían mis paradigmas y leí un texto que me giró la existencia.

Hemos creído en el amor de Dios: así puede expresar el cristiano la opción fundamental de su vida. No se comienza a ser cristiano por una decisión ética o una gran idea, sino por el encuentro con un acontecimiento, con una Persona, que da un nuevo horizonte a la vida y, con ello, una orientación decisiva.

Había llegado a mis manos la Encíclica DEUS CARITAS EST. Esas cinco líneas resumían lo que Dios estaba haciendo en mí. No era una decisión cultural, ni filosófica y menos aún intelectual. Yo era católico por gracia de Dios. Él había salido a mi encuentro.

Desde ese momento comencé a revisar los textos del Cardenal Ratzinger. No se trataba de opinión, yo deseaba corroborar lo que acababa de leer. Y me impactó lo que descubrí. Un teólogo extraordinario, un fiel defensor de la belleza de la fe, de la humanidad sin utilitarismo, capaz de leer los signos de los tiempos con una sencillez impactante y un hombre coherente con sus ideales: su renuncia así me lo demostró.

Con él descubrí que es una «historia de amor» la relación que Dios tiene con nosotros, la humanidad. Sus textos me cuestionaron porque entendí que el cristianismo no es una serie de ideas, dogmas o prohibiciones.

Benedicto XVI es gigante y eso el mundo nunca se lo perdonará. Se le vilipendiará en los grandes medios de comunicación, será despreciado por no ceder ante la presión de un mundo sin norte y sentido, todo ello necesario, aunque doloroso, porque como el mismo lo escribió: «quien va hacia Dios, no se aleja de los hombres, sino que se hace realmente cercano a ellos».

Benedict XVI and how he impacted me

When I heard about Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger the mental image I developed was that of a resentful and frustrated man, someone who from his authority imposed, emasculated and limited the growth of the Catholic faith. A character who instead of being a pastor was the God's rottweiler.

I understand that I built that image out of prejudice. I used to read a lot of Tony de Mello and knowing that Cardinal Ratzinger had issued a communication censuring his teachings seemed unacceptable to me, a senseless attack and above all an abuse. On top of that, to know it, a progressive who became a conservative to move up in the ecclesiastical career. All this, added to what the press wrote, increased my rejection of him.

When he was named Pope, he was indifferent to me. My aversion was so great that I did not accept any closeness. However, in 2005 everything changed.

I remember that I was in a stage of strong revision. My questioning was deep and painful. New perspectives flooded me and shook my paradigms and I read a text that turned my existence upside down.

We have believed in God's love: this is how a Christian can express the fundamental option of his life. One does not begin to be a Christian by an ethical decision or a great idea, but by an encounter with an event, with a Person, which gives a new horizon to life and, with it, a decisive orientation.

I had received the Encyclical DEUS CARITAS. Those five lines summed up what God was doing in me. It was not a cultural decision, not a philosophical one and even less an intellectual one. I was a Catholic by the grace of God. He had come to meet me.

From that moment on, I began to review the texts of Cardinal Ratzinger. It was not a matter of opinion, I wanted to corroborate what I had just read. And I was shocked by what I discovered. An extraordinary theologian, a faithful defender of the beauty of faith, of humanity without utilitarianism, capable of reading the signs of the times with a striking simplicity and a man consistent with his ideals: his resignation proved it to me.

With him I discovered that God's relationship with us, humanity, is a "love story". His texts challenged me because I understood that Christianity is not a series of ideas, dogmas or prohibitions.

Benedict XVI is a giant and the world will never forgive him for that. He will be vilified in the big media, he will be despised for not giving in to the pressure of a world without direction and sense, all this is necessary, although painful, because as he himself wrote: "he who goes towards God, does not move away from men, but becomes really close to them".
