The Rooftop Chronicle

Today, I am going to take you on another short photographic trip. Swirling about the rooftops of my neighborhood. Sometimes, you don't have to go far to tell remarkable stories. All you need is a photographer's eye and a camera. Luckily for me, that was the very thing I had when a little drama appeared in black and gray before my lens.

It was a classic overcast day. The type that lends itself to black-and-white photography, producing good contrasts and enhancing atmosphere. I was walking by a farmhouse when I noticed a very special visitor on the roof opposite. An impressive crow marched across the tiles of the roof in a commanding manner.

Upon first look, it posited that the crow was conducting his own afternoon leisurely patrolling the roof. In fact, it was apparent very quickly that this crow was on a mission. I then watched intently as he steered horizontally across the roof. Each step was deliberate, its head feathered down almost in a stooped position as if scoping the ground for something attractive. It was quite humanising watching this crow navigate along the perimeter of the tiles; almost like a tourist on an adventure to explore something great.

Then came the crucial moment, which I was fortunate enough to catch on camera. The crow stopped, lowered its head, and began probing its bill intent on getting into a crack between the roof tiles. It looked like it was purposefully putting away something or perhaps excavating something that it had stored away. The ability of crows to hoard food and memorise complicated hiding locations is well known. It was like I was watching a mini treasure cache or a rediscovery! In photo 4, 5, 6, you can most clearly see when it was engaged in using its bill. I wonder what it had stashed? A nut? Some bread? Maybe even a shiny ornament it prized!

What made all of this even more amusing was the presence of a third actor: a pigeon that was sitting calmly on another part of the same roof. It appeared to be observing the crow's play with stoic calm the whole time. You can perfectly see how it followed the scene glancing to the right, directly in the direction of the crow. You could practically read its thoughts: "What's she doing there?" It was a delightful combination of busy enthusiasm and calm observation.

It is this kind of little day-to-day observations that never stop to amaze me and that I am glad to share. It proves that one does not have to always travel very far to create and participate in fascinating animal stories. Sometimes just a glance up is enough to see and bear witness to small wonders of nature.
