Future of the Internet: Digital Prison or Wild West
Here are two notable recent news:
- Triple-A released its Cryptocurrency Ownership Data 2024 report, which predicts 560 million cryptocurrency users this year, more than ever before in history.
- Apple presented Apple Intelligence, an AI assistant that can see and analyze all the information on your phone.
These two news reflect two diametrically opposed trends.
On the one hand, decentralized Internet technologies are developing right now, which allow people to gain complete freedom and privacy on the Internet. And interest in them is growing.
At the same time, technologies for tracking people and analyzing data are improving, thanks to which everyone is under the supervision of a digital “Big Brother”. Right now we are at a fork in the road. What will the Internet of the future be like? Will it be permeated by the total control of states and corporations, or, on the contrary, will it become completely decentralized and free?
Digital prison
In this scenario, the Internet becomes a place where every action of users is monitored, recorded and analyzed. Large corporations and governments can use surveillance technologies to monitor people's behavior, limiting their freedom and privacy. This may lead to restrictions on freedom of speech, expression and access to information. Algorithms can create “filtered bubbles,” presenting users only with certain viewpoints and information, leading to narrow thinking and limited access to a variety of information sources.
Tracking and data analytics technologies are becoming more advanced thanks to big data and machine learning, and regulatory frameworks are becoming more stringent. Today, large corporations like Google, Apple and Meta have a large amount of data about each user and are obliged to share this information at the request of the authorities.
Wild West
In this scenario, the Internet becomes a completely decentralized field of freedom, where censorship or total surveillance is impossible. Both information and finance become free. The widespread use of Bitcoin (or more modern cryptocurrencies) is giving people back control over their personal finances.
Today there are technologies that could make the Internet completely decentralized. Web3 already functions as a parallel economy, with its own exchanges, banks, marketplaces and social networks — but without centralized control.
And decentralized Internet technologies from Dexnet, such as a decentralized mobile operator or a decentralized node, already today allow you to use the Internet bypassing centralized providers, which means freedom and anonymity. And, ultimately, the future of the Internet depends on each individual user.
