To Honor Old Masters - David Cox

Hello Dear Friends ! Today I would like to present You David Cox ( 1783 – 1859 ), a highly prolific painter of English and Welsh scenery – landscapes, coastal scenes and rustic genre – chiefly in watercolour, but in oils as well.

In 1836 Cox made a technical discovery that was to give his work a distinctive character – he started to use a rough textured wrapping paper, made in Dundee, which well suited his rapid strokes and his representation of windswept landscapes with rough atmospheric effects. However, he only ordered a ream and when it was finished was never able to obtain the same quality of paper again. A similar paper today is known as ' David Cox Paper '.

Member of the Birmingham Society of Artists Cox made many sketching tours in England and Wales, he visited France, Holland and Belgium. His works were immensely popular in the 19th century and many of his pupil's paintings were sold as authentic works.
