Why "We Are Not Afraid" Means Everything To Me

There was a season in my life where I felt completely alone.
Not the "I want some quiet time" kind of alone. The "world is beating you down and no one seems to get it" kind.

Friends were busy. Plans fell apart. I kept asking God, “Where are You in this?”

Then I heard this song: "We Are Not Afraid".

The moment he sang it, my chest just broke open:
“we are only afraid of not standing with Jesus.”

That one line reset me.

Because suddenly all my other fears looked small.
Afraid of failing? Afraid of rejection? Afraid of standing alone?
None of that mattered if I was standing with Him. And if I wasn’t standing with Him, then that was the only thing worth being afraid of.

The song isn’t saying life will be easy. It’s saying: we can walk through the fire, the critics, the doubt, the loneliness… because we’re not alone. Jesus is with us.
That chorus feels like armor. Like someone reminding you: stand up. You’re not doing this by yourself.

Since then, it’s been my anthem. I play it before hard conversations, before big decisions, on mornings when I feel weak. It reminds me that courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s choosing who you stand with.

Why I want to perform this for Hive Open Mic Week 328

Week 328 for me is about courage and conviction.

The Hive community has been a place where I’ve learned to show up, even when it’s scary. Post the song. Share the voice. Stand alone on stage and hope people connect with it.

But this song reminds me why I do it. I’m not performing to be perfect. I’m performing to remind us that we don’t have to be afraid of standing alone — because when we stand with Jesus, we’re never actually alone.

I want to do a stripped-down cover. Just voice and guitar/piano, so the words can do the heavy lifting. Especially that bridge: we are only afraid of not standing with Jesus. I want people in the comments to feel that same peace I felt the first time I heard it.

If one person listens and feels a little braver to keep going, to keep standing, to keep trusting… then my job is done.
