Maybe you didn't loose them... You just kept going forward.
Success, they say, will cost you friends.
At first, that sounds scary. It makes success feel lonely, like something you gain while losing the people you once shared everything with. But as I grow and reflect more on life, I’m beginning to see it differently.
Life is a journey.
And like every journey, not everyone you start with will finish with you. Not because they are bad people, not because something went wrong but simply because everyone has their own destination.
As you climb the ladder of life, you begin to notice that some people stop along the way. Some settle, some find comfort, and some reach what they consider their peak. And that’s okay. That is their destination.
But what happens when you haven’t reached yours yet?
You keep going.
And sometimes, that means leaving people behind not out of pride, not out of wickedness, but out of purpose. Because you owe it to yourself to keep moving, to keep growing, to keep chasing what you believe your life should be.
It doesn’t make you a bad person.
It doesn’t mean you don’t value the memories you shared or the moments you built together. It simply means your journey is not finished yet.
We often misunderstand this part of growth. We label it as “losing friends” when in reality, it’s just life happening. It’s people walking their paths at their own pace.
Some people are meant to walk with you for a season, not a lifetime. And that doesn’t reduce their importance, it only defines their role in your story.
The truth is, growth sometimes requires separation. Not every friendship will survive change, ambition, or evolution. And that’s one of the hardest parts of becoming who you’re meant to be.
But instead of feeling guilty, we should learn to appreciate those moments for what they were, beautiful, necessary, and part of the journey.
So yes, success may “cost” you friends…
But maybe it’s not really a cost.
Maybe it’s just life aligning everyone with where they truly belong.
Have you ever outgrown a friendship while chasing your goals? How did it make you feel?
