Found this hidden gem while exploring Car Street
Hotel Sri Durga
Into a bylane directly opposite the British-era Flower Market, surrounded by musical instrument makers, Sri Durga non veg hotel is likely an enigma on the majorly vegetarian Car Street. Since conception, it’s been offering earnest chicken & fish dishes, & was started in 1960 by a Mr. Bangera, whose son has the reins today. Join us on our little sojourn to this antiquated establishment, where the soot blackened kitchen walls tell many a story.

Bangude tawa fry:
This is how we like our Tawa fry, with a thin layer of coarse masala crisply coating the skin, & the oily, moist meat underneath, suffused with the spice mix (g-g & red chilli mainly). Bravo.

₹: 80
Chicken pepper:
The chunks rather than being dotted with fiery black pepper, are instead interspersed with browned onion, capsicum & ginger-garlic. This is a Chilly. It’s not what we ordered, but the 4-5 pieces ARE chunky & the thin coating seared in the slightly sweet desi-Chinese inspired masala, delish.
Food: 🤘🏻
₹: 70/half
Marwai Sukka:
The lightly salty & astringent Clams are tossed around well in juicy coconut shavings, aromatic Byadgi chillies, coriander & methi seeds, & yes, the bitter mustard seeds. While drier than many Marwai Sukkas we’ve tried before, the core flavours remain here as well, & it’s more than acceptable with a juicy curry & rice.
Food: 👍🏻
₹: 40/half
Mutton Masala:
The plump red meat on this was cooked succulently unlike what we’ve come to expect at restaurants (1-2 pieces can often turn out stiff), & the mature n mellow coconut-chilli Gassi was soaked up wonderfully by the cuts. The fatty chunk was a good end to the meaty meal.
Food: 🤘🏻
₹: 120/half
Meals:
Supposed to have brown/white rice come with a fish curry(which we declined to accommodate the Mutton masala), this also has a sobering pumpkin curry, fresh salad & pickle.
Food: 👍🏻
₹: 30
