SONG CHALLENGE 2025 PHASE 1—CHANGE IS A CONSTANT

This is my entry for The Song Challenge for the year 2025. Phase 1. An original composition of mine titled CHANGE IS A CONSTANT.

I previously had no idea that this challenge even existed until just a few days ago, and how glad I was. I've never really had the opportunity to put any of my original songs out there, for many reasons. I have never been really financially bouyant enough to get any of them produced professionally. I also have the occasional bout of doubt and imposter syndrome in my abilities as a songwriter and musician generally, so much so that I often shy away from putting my work out there. But I realize that fortune only favors the bold so I've been dealing with that, and this platform is one of those that help me deal with that. Here, I have found acceptance for my beginner music and I am very grateful for that, beyond what I can fully express.

The song I play in this video post is an unreleased song of mine titled CHANGE IS A CONSTANT. I wrote the song early this year, sometime in late May. The song is mostly self-explanatory and is the summation of two to three major life events that happened to me around the time.

I had graduated last year October as a medical doctor. Early in April, I left my residential town of Ibadan, Nigeria to go commence my one year of compulsory housemanship or internship in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state, Nigeria. This is how the song starts, and what the first half of the first verse talks about.

The rest of the verses detail some circumstances that contributed to me wanting to move. I had a huge falling out with my dad in February that led to him disowning me and me being unapologetic about anything and going willfully into exile. Before you go ahead and judge me, as I can sense some will do, remember, you don't know all the details. That some month in February, my girlfriend of over 6 months broke up with me, not coz either of us did anything, coz we were perfect for each other, but over differences in religious beliefs at the time. So much has been left unsaid but all of these culminated into the chorus.

The chorus, in conjunction with the bridge is a statement of acceptance. A choice not to wallow in self-pity or any other wasteful emotion. Something that says “I realize this is a change, and change is a constant, and with change being the only constant thing in life, the only choice left is to accept the changes while praying, hoping, and working you way better days.
