Community — What is it and why do we need it?
Every product, from physical goods such as clothes, toys or hardware to digital goods, needs its own fan base. Without the buyers, we wouldn’t have a business. The reputation and name of each product is determined not only by its quality, but also relies on its people, crowd, users and consumers.
When talking about digital products, which are not tangible, we must make sure that the conversation is always alive. No one sees your digital product on the street, no one is playing with it, no one is wearing it. You must make sure that people know your digital product. When you create a live discussion, and harness people to your mission, you benefit from an organic channel that creates constant conversations and free promotions for it.
An additional advantage of a community is the fact that it shows your status as a product. Imagine entering a forum for a specific online service, and seeing thousands of comments and posts — wouldn’t you automatically feel different about it?
When you have a large enough community, you can also understand your crowd’s needs and thoughts.
Discussion groups always bring new ideas, shed light and sometimes shape an integral part of your product. Some customers’ questions can be answered without involving any support group. This new “tier” of support can sometimes take off a substantial load from your staff and give you extra time to work on other goals.
Can I make the product better? Should I change one feature or another? Is my service good enough? These questions and the answers for them will only make your product stronger. If you show that you are listening to your community, you will only get stronger and people will trust you. You will have the edge people are looking for when choosing one product over another.
