Steemians not supporting new steemians. Why?

Ever before i venture into steemit, i was told that its one big family, that supports everyone to reach an height. so, as a student that i am, I got interested in it and i enrolled. But what am seeing here is opposite of the info i got ever before i joined. I tried my best as much as possible to upvote people, resteem their post but no one does upvote my post. I have about five hundred and ninety two followers but this persons are not helping matters here. Am getting fed up already. It is not fair. Try to upvote someone when he upvotes you so that we can all grow in oneness. I think you all had better had a rethink on this and start helping one another. Thanks for your time.
