New name for something old / Nombre nuevo para algo viejo - LOH contest week #286 (eng-esp)
Hi, girls!
What's now known as bullying is something that, unfortunately, has always existed and always will. I don't think it will ever stop, even though we see it less and less. And this is coming from someone who is a mother and has been teaching for over thirty years.
Is bullying a bad thing? Absolutely: extremely bad.
Therefore, beyond our fight to eradicate this evil, I focus more on creating the tools to defend ourselves against this harassment and everything else that we students experience. Yes, because none of this is new, even though the term "school bullying" is relatively new in the Spanish-speaking world.
At those school ages, children begin to interact daily with other children, they begin to experience contact with people who are not their relatives, who come with different upbringings and personalities. They're no longer the kings of the house, the darlings of mom and dad, but just one of the family, on equal footing with everyone else. It's a difficult transition.
If you add to that the fact that it's normal to feel they have to test their strength against others (physically or metaphorically speaking), since it's instinctive, feelings of envy or contempt, friendship and love, among many others, begin to surface. Most of these feelings are completely new to them, so it's normal for them to act violently or differently, either against others or themselves.
That's why, although I'm alert to any case of bullying or discrimination, I focus more on providing them with the necessary tools to protect themselves from any of these unpleasant situations. No one will suffer bullying if they know how to defend themselves. And I'm not referring to violence, but to reporting it, to knowing how to act when faced with this abusive person.
These are age-old problems, ones we've learned to eliminate. Perhaps one day they will be eradicated completely and forever. I hope so.

Hola, chicas!
