A field guide to earning on Ecency without chasing rewards

People often arrive at Ecency with one question first: how do I earn here? It is a fair question and we will answer it. But we want to answer it in a way that will actually serve you, because the people who come only to extract rewards tend to leave disappointed and the people who come to participate tend to find the rewards follow them. This is a field guide to the second path.

What rewards are actually for

On Hive, the network that Ecency is built on, content can earn rewards through community votes. This is real and it is one of the genuinely novel things about posting here. But it helps to understand what the mechanism is for. Rewards exist to point attention toward what a community values and to let that community share value with the people creating it. They are a signal of appreciation made tangible, not a wage and not a slot machine.

The moment you treat them as a slot machine, two things happen. You start producing for the algorithm instead of for people, and people can tell. The work gets thinner, the engagement gets colder and the rewards you were chasing get harder to reach. The incentive eats itself.
