What Are You Doing

There are two different questions here depending on the placement of emphasis. Do you stress ‘what’ or ‘you’? Such a written statement requires some surrounding verbiage for meaning.

With the emphasis on ‘what’ the question directs the reader to think about their choice of actions. It focuses on the options available. You can choose to do other things.

With the emphasis on ‘you’, the question turns the attention to thinking about potential solutions to the problem being discussed. If the question is posed in a discussion about social injustice or poverty, the answer pivots on personal involvement.

Both questions may be employed to motivate the reader to change.

Your family is needy.. There is another struggling family far away. Think about the options of emphasis.

These questions expose the primary motives behind your thoughts. Do you think mostly about your needs, or the needs of others?
