Schonbrunn Zoo In Vienna, Austria

Hi there. In this travel post I share my experiences at Schonbrunn Zoo in Vienna, Austria. This zoo is right by the Schonbrunn Castle. This trip was in September 2023.

Entering The Zoo & Fare Payment

The zoo is past the Schonbrunn Castle area. There was a machine where you can purchase your tickets on your own. (Picture not shown) Wait times during the morning were not very long. It was much better than my visit to Toronto Zoo before this trip. Toronto Zoo wait times for tickets were long and awful. Bad operations there. This Vienna zoo was much better.

To enter the zoo, scan your tickets to get through. We entered the zoo from the castle side. Later we found out there were two other entrances.

I don't have a map of the zoo here. I do recall browsing around for a bit, then going uphill on a trail.

At one of the higher parts of the zoo, there were a bunch of people gathered together to see some wolves. The one guide was there with her mic was providing information about these wolves.

Elephant, Zebra, Giraffe

I was pleasantly surprised that you could see the tall giraffes up close. Look at the patterns on the one giraffe. Very nice.

Aquarium Section

This zoo does have an aquarium section. Some parts inside were really dark. Watch your step.

Polar Bear

Toronto Zoo did not have polar bears but this Vienna zoo did. At the time there were a couple of kids who were excited to see the polar bears. They were chanting Eisbär. This is German for Polar Bear. I knew some basic German at the time.

Closing Notes

This zoo was much better than my visit to my local Toronto Zoo. From the Castle side entrance, this zoo did not seem big. However, as you explore more of the zoo, you find out that this zoo is pretty big. There is so much to see and do here. At the time, I think I took 3 hours here. No lunch was eaten here was it was in the morning and we had lunch later.

In terms of trip planning, you could do the Schonbrunn Castle first in the morning and then visit the zoo later. They do have restaurants in this zoo so you can eat lunch here.

This zoo was really good. A lot to see and explore here. My rating is 9 out of 10.
