Foggintor quarry Dartmoor

One of the few nice easy fairly flat walks up on Dartmoor is just a short drive from Princetown on the B3357 and pull in at the Yellowmead farm track car park.

The walk up to Foffintor quarry is only about 1.5k and looking on google maps The lazy among you might be tempted to drive it but don’t the track up to Yellowmeade Farm is ok but there is a locked gate and no parking so you will end up driving back.

beyond the gate there are old granite tramway sleepers which are a lot rougher.

The first hint of the quarry you see are the large granite spoil heaps from the quarry workings started in the 1820s. Much of the Granite was used locally for Dartmoor Prison and other buildings in Prince Town but also from Nelsons Column in London.

Once You reach the Quarry you will find a favourite spot for wild swimming, but not today as it just a bit cold but I imagine it very refreshing on a hot summers day.

The water is mostly fairly shallow as you can see the Granite rocks below so diving in could be a bit risky.

In addition to the quarry there are some old ruins which are very photogenic.

As usual there are plenty of warning signs in case you’re thinking of enjoying yourself.

Let’s just finish off with some more shots of the quarry and one of the local residents.
