Cornwall Praa Sands.

In all the years I have been coming down to Clowance near Camborne, Praa Sands is a place I have never been as I normally head to north coast, it’s only about a 20 minute drive away on the south coast. Considered to be one of the best surf beaches on the Cornish south coast, there was not much surfing today with waves hardly more than 30cm and the sea very flat with the offshore winds.

The crescent shaped beach is a couple of miles long mostly course sand and rocky gravel at the waters edge. There is plenty of parking. But I imagine it’s rammed in the summer but on a grey late September day it’s mostly dog walkers as it’s outside the summer dog beach ban, and a few hardy souls still on their holidays.

The RNLI still have the safe area flags up and a life saving team on the beach but this is probably the last week as October seems to be the cutoff date for them.

At the carpark end of the beach is the Welloe cafe and bar along with a few other small shops, cafes and surf hire places. The Welloe is quite large and has a good menu and a well stocked bar. Most of the restaurant tables over look the beach and sea so the view are quite good even on a grey day like today.

So Hivers Praa Sands is well worth a visit even on a grey rainy late September afternoon.
