The Roads We Complain About
People often begin their journeys with the kind of optimism that makes the air feel lighter.
The first steps are easy. The path is wide and soft, the wind is gentle, and the world seems to cheer us forward.
Along the way, bright flowers line the edges, quietly adding beauty without asking for attention.
But roads have moods.
One turn can change everything—the ground becomes uneven, sharp stones replace soft soil, and the gentle wind turns into a push against the chest.
The flowers fade from sight, and the mind begins to protest: “Why is it like this now? Why can’t it stay as it was?”
Many stop there.
Some turn back, chasing the memory of an easier path. Others wait, hoping the road will magically smooth itself out.
But roads don’t change for those who stand still.
It is only by moving forward—step after uncertain step—that we notice small, unexpected signs of life.
A lone plant breaking through the dry earth. A patch of green hiding in the shade.
They are not placed there to make the path easy; they are proof that life can exist even where comfort does not.
People are not so different.
We, too, have seasons when nothing feels smooth, when every direction seems uphill.
The mistake is thinking we must wait for perfect conditions before moving.
In truth, it is movement that shapes the conditions.
Hard roads are not there to punish.
They are there to teach balance on uneven ground, patience in long stretches, and resilience in the heat of the day.
And when we finally look back, it is not the easy parts we remember most—it is the places where we thought we could not go on, yet did.
The road’s beauty is not in its smoothness but in what it shapes within us.
