“You know,” Mrs. Velma Stepforth said to Mrs. Gladys Jubilee Trent, “complete failure in life looks different in different people.”

“Ain't it the truth,” Mrs. Jubilee Trent said. “Sometimes it comes cruising by in a convertible, arguing with itself.”

The two grandmothers watched the Greylingtons drive by for the tenth time, still arguing with each other in their car.

“They don't even realize there's a betting pool at this point,” Mrs. Stepforth said, pointing with her chin at a neighboring porch where the pot was getting bigger every time the Greylingtons passed by. That is a sad situation, because the Greylingtons definitely married for money, not love.”

“I just don't get that one,” Mrs. Jubilee Trent said. “I wouldn't be able to sit in the face of someone I didn't love for life, not for any amount of money.”

“Yeah, but both of us married the loves of our lives while still young, and because we don't even know what desparation is,” Mrs. Stepforth said.

“True,” Mrs. Jubilee Trent. “We can truly thank God for that, even though from the viewpoints of the likes of the Greylingtons, we were both poor in a way they cannot fully understand.”

“That's eleven times around,” Mrs Stepforth said as the Greylingtons drove by again.

“On such a beautiful day, too,” Mrs. Jubilee Trent said.

“Complete failure,” Mrs. Stepforth said. “To have a day like this, and not be enjoying it with family you chose for yourself is a complete failure.”
