HOW I CREATED A CUSTOM ANKARA GOWN WITH A SPIRAL ROSE SLEEVE FOR A FIRST-TIME CUSTOMER
Hey lovelies ❤️
It's your favorite girl @debbie-ese 😍
Welcome to my blog 🤗
In this post I will be sharing with you a beautiful gown I made for a customer that has a notable spiral rose sleeve on one side and a puffed sleeve on the other side. The gown is made using ankara fabrics and the sleeves design are made from satin fabrics. The bodice of the gown is visibly fitted and the skirt is straight shaped. This design is one of my works during last year December rush and it is for a first time customer who was referred by a satisfied customer.
Materials Needed
- 4 yards Ankara fabrics
- Asooke fabrics
- Lining
- Threads matching the outfit
- Scissors
- Tailoring chalk
Step by Step
We will begin by drafting the bodice on the lining by marking the shoulder measurement of 8" on fold, then from the shoulder line, you will measure down 16" for the bust length and 20" for the half length.
Next, mark the bustline (44"), underbust (36"), and waistline (42") accordingly.
Then divide the bust measurement (44") by four which will give you 11" and add 1" for seam allowance.
For the underbust (36") divide by four which will give you 9", add 1" for seam allowance. Also, divide the waist (42") by four which is 10½". Next you will connect all the points so as to shapen your bodice.
Next, for the back bodice draft it out and include zipper allowance at the centre.
Then use the lining to cut the ankara fabrics and cut them out.
Next, draft the skirt part of the gown using the hip measurement and full gown length measurements. Then shape the skirt from the hip area to make it fitted. Afterwards cut the front piece and back piece for both the lining and Ankara fabrics.
Next, join the bodice to skirt at the waistline and be sure it well aligned.
Then next is the rose spiral sleeve that we will make using satin fabrics. This sleeve is made by cutting a long spiral satin strip in a circle shape.
- After cutting the long spiral strips, then i will sew hard net on one side of the strip before heading to my ironing table to give it a good press so as to give it a good finishing. Then sew the other edge neatly and set aside.
Now, start gathering the spiral strip gently by folding it into a rose petals shape. You can use your hand needle to tack or use your gum when needed to hold it in place. Do this until you achieve your desired result and stitch it effectively at the end.
Next attach the rose to the sleeve by handstitching it to ensure it is firm and doesn't lose shape.
Next, attach your zipper and hem the gown.
Then give the dress a good press all round to flatten every seam and give your work a good final look.
Next wear your gown on a mannequin to check if there are any adjustments that needs attention.
Your gown is ready to be delivered.
