The Things I Worried About Most Never Happened the Way I Feared They Would
I have wasted so much time in imaginary disasters. Lying awake running through scenarios that were detailed and convincing and completely fictional. The conversation that would go terribly. The decision that would collapse everything. The worst possible version of whatever uncertain thing was sitting ahead of me.
Most of those things never happened at all. And the ones that did go badly rarely went badly in the specific way i had rehearsed in my head at two in the morning. They went badly in different ways, unexpected ways, ways my anxiety had not even thought to predict.
Which made all that rehearsal not just useless but a specific kind of waste. I had experienced the fear of things happening without getting the information i would have needed to actually prepare for them. I suffered versions of events that never arrived while the real challenges came from directions i had not been watching.
This is the thing about anxiety that i had to sit with honestly at some point. It presents itself as preparation. As thinking ahead, being responsible, taking things seriously. But most of the time it is not preparation in any functional sense. It is just suffering in advance of things that may or may not require suffering at all.
I am not saying stop thinking ahead or stop taking real risks seriously. Actual planning and considered thought have their place. But there is a difference between practical thinking and the kind of spiralling that happens at night when your imagination gets access to your fears without any supervision.
The worst case scenario your mind generates at two in the morning is almost never what actually shows up. And even when hard things do come, you usually find some capacity to handle them that was not visible from the inside of the worry.
You are more capable of handling reality than your anxiety believes you are.
The imaginary version of your problems is almost always worse than what actually arrives.
