Finally! Multimeter Testing, Wiring Diagrams, and Expert Advice – Part 3
I continue working on my Chery Arauca. It's been over a month now, and I still haven't found the reason why it won't start. However, I have made good progress, which is why today I bring you an update featuring a more technical approach, thanks to new tools and studying the service manual.
To move forward properly, I was finally able to buy a multimeter; without this tool, I couldn't make any progress. It is essential to stop guessing and assuming, and to finally have real data. This postponed the purchase of spare parts, as the tool will help us pinpoint the component I actually need to buy.
🎧 Advice from the experts
This week's major breakthrough came thanks to the advice of some Chery specialist technicians. It was a remote consultation since they are not in the country, but their guidance was very accurate. The codes I pulled with the scanner (P0122, P0222, P0106) do not necessarily mean the sensors are damaged.
They gave me excellent information regarding the MAP sensor and the throttle body (TPS). Between the connections of both sensors, there is a circuit line that shares electrical power. Furthermore, they warned me about the importance of checking the "master connector" located near the firewall, which over time, due to vibration and dirt, can cause intermittent connection issues, abruptly cutting off communication.
🗺️ The treasure - Service manuals
Despite this good guidance, I set out to get the wiring diagrams found in the service manual. These come accompanied by diagnostic procedures to determine the origin of the fault codes. Thanks to this, I was able to confirm what the technicians indicated, in addition to understanding the importance of checking the ECM grounds and where they are located.
⚡ Getting to work - Continuity tests
With a clearer understanding of the theory, I grabbed the multimeter to verify if these sensors actually shared the same circuit. I started measuring continuity between the MAP sensor pins and the throttle body connector, finding that there is indeed continuity between pin 1 of the MAP and pin 2 of the TPS. This helped me a lot to understand how the wiring harness is structured and gives me a baseline for the voltage test I will perform to see if there is a 5-volt reference.
🔜 Next steps
Now all that's left is to find the ECM grounds. It won't be easy since they are located under the dashboard and space is very tight. Buy the new battery! This is vital, since without one in optimal condition, I cannot perform live voltage tests with the ignition switch on. I also need it to run the 10-second idle relearn procedure indicated in the service manual to recalibrate the throttle body.
