Buzz app and Hive blockchain
Twitter founder Jack Dorsey has been popping up in the tech/bitcoin news cycle in the past year. Here's a quick recap:
- While heading Twitter, he initiated Bluesky (2019) then set it up as a separate entity.
2 After Twitter (2021 & 2022), he moved over to a lead role at Bluesky. Then he left Bluesky (2024) thinking it was getting too centralized. (May 2024) - He embraced Nostr and started "and Other Stuff" (2025).
- He announced Bitchat (2025), a mesh messaging app that runs purely via Bluetooth, no internet or wifi. (Bitchat made news a couple of days ago when India demanded it be pulled off GitHub. But, this takedown seems to have failed. Devs forked the repo to other places making it arguably even more accessible.)
- It was announced that Square point-of-sale devices would all natively accept Bitcoin Lightning payments (2025-2026).
- He announced that Block would cut 40% of its workforce and specifically named AI as the reason for doing so.
- Just a few days ago (July 21, 2026), he announced...Buzz.
Buzz (at https://buzz.xyz) is what prompted me to write here on Hive.
When I first read of "Buzz" and glanced at the website, it immediately conjured up the Hive blockchain.
It has become a silly "hobby" of mine to collect Hives. The list was up to 20 and I wondered if I should add Buzz. "Buzz" is not technically a "Hive," of course. But, why not? Why not make it number 21 and add it to the fun.
What's Buzz?
I should say what Buzz is. Well, I'm not exactly sure, but it appears to be a communication app comparable to Slack and a workplace. It is built on Nostr and fits the "other stuff" concept (Nostr is more than just a chat thingee). Unlike a Slack, Buzz is completely open source and decentralized. It also welcomes AI agents into the chat to do the things that they do.
The GitHub repo might explain it better than the website.
Well, what about it?
Back to Buzz...Hive. It didn't take long for the first "Hive" reference to pop up, or at least the first one I saw.
Here's my comment on Nostr (with a link back to my initial Hive blockchain, PeakD Snap four days ago).
Using it?
Out of curiosity, I just downloaded Buzz. I logged in with my Nostr private key (unlike Hive with four private keys, there is only one on Nostr, called an "nsec"). Apparently it requires a command line interface (CLI) software for either Claude or Codex, so that's installing now. It's taking its sweet time, but I have no expectations. We'll see what happens.
What does this mean for Hive? (the Hive blockchain)
Likely, this means absolutely nothing for Hive. There are already so many Hives, adding a Buzz is nothing. The synergy of decentralization, Buzz, Hive, bees buzzing around, the honeycombs and hex shapes all seem to blend together to me as a Hive user. If anything, it might garner a little interest in Hive, even if only by confusion.
