An abyss in the End of the World - Un abismo en el Fin del Mundo

This photo, I took it just over a year ago, but I came across it again while looking for a couple of files. Have you ever felt like your emotions at a particular moment were reflected in an image? Well, this photo seems to describe what I felt when I first arrived at the end of the world.

If one is not paying attention to the phases of the moon in the calendar, one can easily confuse a moonless nite with a nite of dark clouds that, far from releasing water, only annoy by devouring every strand of light.

In my case, shortly after moving to the island (I live in Tierra del Fuego AIAS, Argentina), a certain fear of the sea that I didn't know was latent in me was unlocked until I came to live here. But as if that weren't enough, the Beagle Channel suddenly introduced me to the ocean, all at once, and that's when I realised I had a certain fear of large bodies of water, but I had already moved to an island, haha. I discovered this while walking along the coast at night; I remember it clearly: I watched a formidable cruise ship that had set sail and was quickly moving away from the port; as it ventured into the sea, its lights dimmed. The horizon, which seemed to divide the darkness of the night from the immensity of the calm sea, merged, and I saw how that enormous vessel sailed south until I lost sight of it in the darkness. A desolating sensation took hold of me; I felt that immense sky and sea were like an abyss that swallowed everything: horizon, ships, lights, dreams, fears. An immense black hole in the serene darkness. A considerable amount of time passed before I could walk along the coast at night again.

<img src="" alt="I took this photo in February 2025 while walking by the bay. This vessel is known as the "Saint Christopher". It is a historic tugboat that has been stranded in the bay of Ushuaia since 1957. It is considered a tourist icon and a symbol of the identity of the city at the End of the World. Even though sometimes that feeling seems to want to embrace me, that impression of unease visits me from time to time, with an abyss of nostalgia, threatening to engulf me, leaving me in a place without a horizon. I emerge unscathed, as the good news is that I learnt to swim in it and reach the shore safely.

Thank you for getting this far.

Gracias por llegar hasta aquí.
