Breewayy Freestyle

March 13th of this year made six years since LMPD killed Breonna Taylor in her own home. Normally there's something planned to mark the occasion, but this year there wasn't nary a mention of anything in the media, social or otherwise. Didn't really matter, during the protests in 2020 we learned to just head for 'the square', Injustice Square Park in downtown, if there was anything going on it was likely starting there.

Six years hadn't changed that. Got down there and found a small crowd of familiar faces. Nothing much happening, nothing formal other than a moment of silence before my arrival, just that old reflex flaring up and folks filtering in. That old feeling of needing to be here, without knowing quite why or what for.

Some were there deliberately, others simply passing through when they spotted old comrades. Filtering in in dribs and drabs, hanging out, catching up, reminiscing before drifting away again. By late afternoon it was down to a double handful of folks hanging round when someone put some music on.

Somebody took a liking to a beat, and the next thing you knew, there was an impromptu freestyle session going on. Was regretting not bringing my 24-70mm lens, but wasn't going to let that stop me from shooting it.

Taking turns freestyling about Breonna and Breewayy (the square), it was such a real and genuine moment hour or two that just brought back memories of a certain long, hot summer.
