The Foreseable Future is Already Here
The work environment is rapidly changing. Many positions that once felt secure are currently standing on the uncertain ground of swift developments in Artificial Intelligence. What was once a distant possibility is now happening before our eyes — the automation and new AI tools that are changing industries, changing necessary skill sets, and bringing all workers into a new reality.
For years, technology has taken the place of menial jobs, but now AI has jumped into the cognitive and artistic fields. The chatbots, generative AI, and machine-learning models that now exist are writing articles, designing websites, coding software, composing and performing music, generating art, even writing legal or business papers. The difference today is that AI is not merely assisting us, but is capable of doing it all.
A friend of mine recently created a fully functional website using only the prompts placed before ChatGPT — an intention to do a website without a background in coding or a degree in web design. Only creativity and inquiry. This alone is an indication of how all this technology is becoming powerful. Within a few years of this, it would require a talented developer, loads of work, and a good lot of cash. But now, a well-written prompt brings working code back within minutes.
Any designer or developer who once thought that their jobs could not be handled by automation has only the wrong impression. The same innovations which make creators able also threaten the established roles. A great many writers, marketers, customer service agents and even analysts are feeling the pressure of this. It is not whether AI replaces your work that is the question. It is can you move fast enough to stay relevant beside the new work.
But this need not be a tragic story. All through the past, great technological revolutions have produced both a displacement and a creation of jobs. The trick lies in adaptability. Rather than fearing AI, inventive professionals can learn to work with it — using it as a companion to create, a go-between to bounce ideas off or as a tool for application.
Those who will learn the prompt creation, the data use or tool that is of AI invention will be the next line of innovators. The near future will belong to those who understand that knowledge is no longer power, but the application of such knowledge with the help of AI tools.
It is a process of up-dating, of re-skilling, of re-imaging one's self and one's place in the new digital ecosystem by all.
AI is not going to displace all the men who use it, but those who use AI power beneficially will surely replace those who do not.
