Planting Day

Finally planted my cherry tomatoes today. Been putting that off for a while now. Waiting on the last frost to pass. Also waiting for it to get closer to May time. That is supposed to be the planting season for us.

Put them in the biodegradable containers. I guess the idea is you can transplant them directly to the ground, container and all. No disturbing the roots when you do it. Easy peasy.

At least in theory.

I really kinda boogered things up though. Bought these soil pellet things. Best I can describe is that it is dehydrated soil in pellet form. When they get wet, they expand. After putting the soil pellets in the containers, I watered them too much. Way too much. It made a mess of everything. The containers started falling apart. Dirt spilled from the breached containers. Seeds started floating off. I scurried to catch them before they went everywhere. It was a comic show. Wish someone had been recording. Maybe glad nobody was.

I had to double up the containers just to hold things together. Not exactly how the instructions said to do it. But ended up improvising. Lost one container and had to start over.

Oh, and also decidede to plant strawberries at same time. Same process. Same disaster. Pure joe mess happened. As I have said before, I am a crappy gardener with a black thumb.

I just hope something makes it from the mess.

Tomorrow is work on the front lawn. Got to hook up the hose. Wet down the bare spots. Then the wife and I will scruff them up. Throw some seed down. Then lay some straw over the top. There aren't many spots, but they're there. Some are big. lIke the one in the picture above. That fungus from last year did a number on the lawn.

Hopefully it doesn't come back.

Almost half tempted to plant wild flowers in the bare spots. Let em go! We had a big bare spot on the side of the lawn where a tree stump was. Planted wild flowers there and they are thriving. Maybe, we will see how the grass seed takes first.

We also need to start replacing our landscaping timber. It's rotting in some places. Completely falling apart in some spots. Even though it was weather treated and only been down about five years. So much for that eh. Not sure when we'll get to it though. Timbers are expensive right now. And it's not something we really need at this moment. Or anytime actually. May look to border things with some large rocks if we can find them. At least they won't rot.

The back yard is still a goat rodeo waiting to happen. Might save the backyard and those Lilly dug holes for another day. One thing at a time.
