Candy Filled Field Trip

Went on a little field trip today. Visited Schimpff's Confectionery in Jeffersonville, Indiana. It's been voted the best candy store in America two years in a row by USA Today. And I can see why.

This is a family owned candy store. The real deal. One of the oldest continuously operated, family-owned candy businesses in the United States. Gustav Schimpff Sr. and Jr. opened the doors on April 11, 1891. That's over 130 years of making candy in the same location. The Schimpff family had been making candy in the Louisville area since the 1850s before that.

Walking in feels like stepping back in time. They've got an authentic 1950s soda fountain with the original tin ceiling. A candy museum with thousands of pieces of American candy memorabilia. And you can watch them make candy on century-old equipment the same way it's been done for over a hundred years. They even survived the 1937 flood. Water got up to the second floor. They're still here.

They're known for their cinnamon red hots, still made by hand on the original marble tables. Chocolates. Toffee. And something called Modjeskas, which are marshmallows covered in caramel. A regional treat I'd never heard of before.

Picked up some sugar free chocolate covered peanuts. Yeah, I'm watching the blood sugar. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy something sweet now and then. Just have to be smart about it.

Sometimes you just need to get out of the house. Go somewhere. See something. Do something different. It doesn't have to be a big adventure. A little candy store a few miles away works just fine. It felt good to be out. Moving. Living. Supporting a small family business that's been around since 1891.
