Artificial intelligence has been gaining ground in the video game industry for some time, but recent statements by Michał Nowakowski, CEO of CD Projekt Red, make it clear that some studios are already taking this technology to a level that seemed like science fiction just a few years ago.
What is most striking is not that AI is being used as a support tool, but that there are companies capable of creating dozens of prototypes in barely a week and launching a complete game in less than a month.
As the executive explained, during a conversation with the founder of one of these studios, the latter claimed he could generate around 40 prototypes in seven days. Then, over the course of about two weeks, he would select the most promising projects and—just a few days later—be able to publish one of them.
This speed is impressive and represents a reality that many traditional developers view with curiosity, but also with a certain degree of concern.
However, the head of CD Projekt Red—a studio known for franchises like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077—does not seem convinced that this is the ideal path for the industry. While he acknowledges that games generated entirely by artificial intelligence will eventually arrive, he admits to having doubts about the quality and impact they might offer.
For him, the real challenge in today's market isn't just developing video games quickly, but making them stand out amidst thousands of releases and the massive volume of content coming from movies, TV series, and social media.
In an era where public attention spans are increasingly limited, Nowakowski believes that success still hinges on original ideas and that hard-to-define "soul" found in works created with a clear vision. In other words, simply producing more isn't enough; one must create something capable of connecting with people.
This stance is particularly interesting because it comes from a company that does not reject artificial intelligence. CD Projekt has made it clear on several occasions that it views this technology as a tool to accelerate certain processes, rather than a substitute for human talent. The studio remains committed to ambitious productions that require years of work and hundreds of developers.
This situation sparks a debate that will likely shape the coming years. On one hand, AI promises to lower costs and drastically reduce development times. On the other, the question arises: can a production created at such speed convey the same personality as titles crafted over years by teams of artists, designers, and programmers? ---
Perhaps video games generated by artificial intelligence are inevitable, but even within the industry itself, there are those who believe that human creativity will remain the most difficult ingredient to replace. In the end, players may forget a product made in three weeks, but memorable experiences are the ones that last for decades.
