Gemini Protocol: The new/old web

Does anyone remember the Internet before the web/html? Does gopher ring a bell?

Before the web we surf today, people used other protocols like ftp (file transfer protocol) and gopher which allowed you to click on links to files which could either be read or downloaded. Graphics only existed as files that could be downloaded.

Although gopher is almost unknown to most people, there are still a few people that are still using it and creating content to be browsed.

There is another much newer protocol which has come out during the last few years which is similar called Gemini.

Gemini seeks to bring back the early simplicity of the Internet with it's text only interface (no graphics) and no ads or tracking or spying that has become such a big concern on the web lately.

When I look for information on the web, I hate reading a page trying to sort out what is the content, I am searching for and what is ads.

Over the last few months, I have been browsing the Gemini space and reading the content that more and more people are posting there.

If this sounds interesting, I encourage those that are interested to take a look and give it a try.

A great starting place is the website:

This website provides a good introduction to Gemini and how it can be accessed and then walks the user through getting setup to access the Gemini universe.
