The late Princess Diana once remarked:

“Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society. It is a goal and an essential part of my life – a kind of destiny.”

For those wishing to lend a helping hand, here are excellent NYC charities that benefit from donations and volunteerism.

Food Bank for New York City

(212) 566-7855

The mission is to help end hunger, and the non-profit organization does exactly that for more than 1.5 million New Yorkers a year. Hungry children, families and senior citizens receive much-needed assistance with every dollar donated.

For example, a one-time gift of $35 will help provide 175 meals.

Student Sponsor Partners

(212) 986-9575

It’s a wonderful program focusing on inner-city youths and supporting them all through high school. SSP places young men and women in private schools, provides mentorship, and helps the students get their diplomas and move on to higher education.

Major sponsors like American Express, Merrill Lynch, and ABC News have contributed to the charity. Individuals can sponsor a student, donate or mentor a student.

Breast Cancer Research Foundation

(800) FIND-A-CURE

BCRF holds an incredible track record for being the top-rated breast cancer organization in the nation and the largest global private funder of breast cancer research.

Their website spells out the mission, “to prevent and cure breast cancer by advancing the world’s most promising research.”

One can support by BCRF through online donations, tributes to a loved one, estate giving and workplace giving.

Brooklyn Movement Center

(718) 771-7000

BMC is a successful community group based in Bed-Stuy. Currently, the organization is zeroing on issues of anti-street harassment, environmental justice, food sovereignty and police accountability.

The aim is to raise $50,000 yearly to “power the movement.” To get involved, BMC recommends becoming a member, meeting BMC members, joining the mailing list and donating.

Coalition for the Homeless

(212) 776-2000

The Coalition for the Homeless has been around since 1981 providing food, housing, crisis services, job training, youth programs and advocacy for some of the city’s most vulnerable.

There are a number of ways to participate. Donations are always key as well as forming corporate teams, volunteering, joining the coalition, working on drives/events.
