Almost endemic to Venezuela. It is restricted to a few isolated localities in the arid zones of the north of the country, in Lara (Saroche, Carora), Falcón (Dabajuro, Casigua, Paraguaná), Anzoátegui (around Píritu and Barcelona) and Sucre (Araya peninsula), as well as on three Caribbean islands, La Blanquilla, Margarita and Bonaire. Its former distribution may have included Curaçao and Aruba, but it became extinct in Aruba around 1950. It is the only species in the genus exclusively adapted to arid zones (Phelps Jr. and Meyer de Schauensee 1979, BirdLife International 2000, Hilty 2003, Forshaw 2006 ).
Casi endémica de Venezuela. Se encuentra restringida a unas pocas localidades aisladas en las zonas áridas del norte del país, en Lara (Saroche, Carora), Falcón (Dabajuro, Casigua, Paraguaná), Anzoátegui (alrededores de Píritu y Barcelona) y Sucre (península de Araya), así como en tres islas del Caribe, La Blanquilla, Margarita y Bonaire. Su distribución anterior quizá incluía Curaçao y Aruba, pero en esta última se extinguió alrededor de 1950. Es la única especie del género adaptada en exclusivo a zonas áridas (Phelps Jr. y Meyer de Schauensee 1979, BirdLife International 2000, Hilty 2003, Forshaw 2006).
