How to Rev Up Creativity

  • Brew peppermint coffee.
  • Listen to something ambient and/or inspiring. (Today's pick: Marc Maron interviewing Eric Idle)
  • Draw a hot bath, adding bubbles or salt as necessary.(Today's pick: Bubbles)
  • Gather notebooks and reading material that energizes you. (Today's picks: The New Yorker and Just Kids by Patti Smith)
  • Light incense.
  • Stare at the smoke and breathe. If it's near a clear window on a cool day, with sun pouring into your space, that's ideal.
  • Breathe.
  • Close your eyes.
  • Notice how your own body feels. Notice how the smoke smells.
  • Sink into your bath.
  • Sip coffee.
  • Write in a notebook until the water turns cold or drains out.
  • If you hear criticism in your head:

  • It's not you.
  • Continue writing, even if it isn't perfect, until your hand hurts.
  • If your hand hurts:

  • Stare at the incense smoke.
  • Breathe.
  • Repeat for at least 10 seconds.
