The Only Completely Innocent Prisoners
Zoos have never made me happy or excited. I was a little girl when I first visited Zoo in Belgrade and I remember that my only big enthusiasm was caused by the big carousel on Kalemegdan Fortress. As a child, I wondered if theese animals were suffering because of their relatives in the wild, if someone was tirelessly looking for them and waiting for their return. I can only imagine how it looks like to catch and transfer animals to a zoo and how sad their first days in a new enviroment are.
The space in which animals are housed can never be exactly the same as their natural habitat. As much as humanity has been taken into account, that is not enough.
We discovered what it was like to be locked up after a coronavirus epidemic last year. Maybe that will encourage us to think about zoos and our wild friends, who are completely innocent, but serve prison sentences to entertain people.
