Today I’m here to tell you a story of betrayal—my own betrayal of myself. A few weeks ago, while looking for something light and quick to watch, I stumbled upon an RCN production also distributed by Amazon Prime Video called “Las de siempre.” I saw that only 8 episodes had been released at the time, so I thought, “Perfect, I’ll finish this in the blink of an eye.”
The premise hooked me right away: the story of a group of women turning 40. Since I’m in that wonderful decade myself, I felt the plot could serve as a mirror—a great opportunity to see myself reflected and connect with characters who think just like me.
What I never imagined was that those “8 episodes” were just the beginning of a massive production that ended up becoming a 91-episode telenovela. I’ll admit there were moments when I wanted to throw in the towel because it was so long, but at other times I simply couldn’t tear myself away from the screen. I was totally hooked on the lives of these four women!
It had been many years since I’d watched a telenovela, but I have to admit that I loved this one. The production has it all, though if I had to offer one small criticism, I’d say I missed seeing a married woman who was completely happy in her marriage; here, unfortunately, they all had some kind of trauma or problem with a man, whether it was their partner or a family member.
The plot unfolds as a series of situations revolving around the search for love at a certain age. And it’s so true: by the time you’re 40, everyone carries a suitcase filled with their past, and these characters’ baggage was anything but light—it was downright traumatic.
Although the show is super entertaining—and you go from one problem to the next—I feel like some situations were a bit extreme. In the story, each character has a different conflict, but there were some plot twists that rubbed me the wrong way. I imagine that in real life, anything can happen, but in my group of friends, for example, we’d never get involved with another friend’s partner or look at a friend’s husband in a different light. But then again… you see all sorts of things on TV! Still, this isn’t just a soap opera—it goes far beyond the typical romantic entanglements. It tackles issues with a very real and necessary social impact, such as coping with illnesses with family support, including premature menopause, cancer, and dementia.
Furthermore, it dares to delve into complex situations such as sexual abuse, gender-based violence, inclusion in schools, and corruption in public institutions. That mix makes it incredibly rich, because in the end, that’s what life is all about: even though problems exist, we have to solve them.
What stood out most to me about this experience was the message of empowerment. When we women reach 40, we feel much freer to say and do whatever we want, without fear of success. That’s what I saw in this novel: a group of four friends who did everything, tried everything, stumbled along the way, but never let life get the better of them. At the end of the day, they proved that all they needed was each other… “The Us of Always.”

Hoy les vengo a contar una historia de traición, de mí para conmigo misma. Hace unas semanas, buscando algo ligero y rápido para ver, me topé con una producción de RCN distribuida también por Amazon Prime Video, llamada “Las de siempre”. Vi que solo tenía 8 capítulos estrenados en ese momento, así que pensé: “Perfecto, esto me lo termino en un abrir y cerrar de ojos”.
La premisa me atrapó de inmediato: la historia de un grupo de mujeres que llegan a los 40 años. Al estar yo en esa maravillosa década, sentí que la trama podría ser un espejo, una gran oportunidad para verme reflejada y conectar con personajes que pensaran igual que yo.
Lo que nunca imaginé es que esos “8 capítulos” eran solo el principio de una súper producción que terminó convirtiéndose en una telenovela de 91 capítulos. Les confieso que hubo momentos en los que quise tirar la toalla por lo larga que era, pero en otros simplemente no podía despegarme de la pantalla. ¡Estaba totalmente enganchada con la vida de estas cuatro mujeres!
Tenía muchísimos años sin ver una telenovela, pero debo admitir que esta me encantó. La producción tiene de todo, aunque si tuviera que hacerle una pequeña crítica, diría que me faltó ver a una mujer casada y plenamente feliz en su matrimonio; aquí, lamentablemente, todas tenían algún trauma o problema con un hombre, ya fuera su pareja o un familiar.
La trama se convierte en un cúmulo de situaciones sobre la búsqueda del amor a cierta edad. Y es que es una gran verdad: a los 40 todo el mundo lleva consigo una maleta donde carga su pasado, y el equipaje de estos personajes no era nada ligero, sino más bien traumático.
Aunque la novela es súper entretenida y sales de un problema para meterte en otro, siento que algunas situaciones fueron un poco extremas. En la historia cada una tiene un conflicto diferente, pero hubo enredos que me hicieron ruido. Imagino que en la vida real pasa de todo, pero en mi grupo de amigas, por ejemplo, jamás nos meteríamos con la pareja de la otra ni miraríamos con otros ojos al marido de una amiga. Pero bueno… ¡casos de casos se ven en la televisión!, pero no es solo un culebrón, también va mucho más allá de los típicos enredos de amor. Toca temas con un impacto social muy real y necesario, como el sobrellevar enfermedades con el apoyo de la familia, entre ellas la menopausia prematura, el cáncer y la demencia senil.
Además, se atreve a profundizar en situaciones complejas como el abuso sexual, la violencia de género, la inclusión escolar y la corrupción en las entidades públicas. Esa mezcla la hace sumamente rica, porque al final de eso se trata la vida: aunque los problemas existan, hay que resolverlos.
Lo que más me llevo de esta experiencia es el mensaje de empoderamiento. Cuando las mujeres llegamos a los 40, nos sentimos mucho más libres de decir y hacer lo que queramos, sin miedo al éxito. Eso fue lo que vi en esta novela: un grupo de cuatro amigas que hicieron de todo, probaron de todo, se cayeron, pero jamás se dejaron vencer por la vida. Al final del día demostraron que solo se necesitaban a ellas mismas… a “Las de siempre”.
