Making a Headphones Stand

A while ago I took the chance of making some things outside the usual instrument builds to get working on easier projects that might help some people with their needs. In this case, it is a headphone stand for my girlfriend. She had bought some really cool headphones this year and did not have anything to hang them or let them rest besides the worktable and box. Since that was the case, I got into looking at designs and decided to make this one.

The first step was cutting some pieces of MDF to start all work. Since this MDF was 9mm thick, it needed at least 3 layers for a solid foundation. Then I sanded all faces of each piece to get a proper glue up surface between them. Once this was ready, I glued up the pieces and let them rest while I looked for some other tools for the work. During the process I used a jigsaw, a drill, a handsaw, files and sandpaper. When the glue was dry I proceeded to cut the shape of the stand.

The upper portion is rounded and has a dent to make room for the part that connects both headphones. It is made on a standard width to accommodate several types of headphones. Then we most difficult part to create was the middle cut of the piece. However, with some drawings on pencil we made some lines to guide the cuts. We started by the circular cut near the top and then proceeded to make the straight cuts with a handsaw. Next, we filed everything near the lines and worked on refining the shapes of all the pieces.

There was the need to add some extra blocks of wood at the ends of the legs of the stand to increase its stability. After that, the rest of the build was completed with sandpaper and also applying some layers of sealer. It is going to get some color, but that will be done later as it has to be in sync with the rest of the things she will get for her office. And of course, I had to test this with my own headphones to see if the balance was ok.

The results speak by themselves. It was cool build. I would take into consideration the fact that this can be made in two pieces that interlock with each other. That would reduce the amount of work and also make it easier to make. It would also serve a nice build to sell on the side while the instruments are being made. All that is to be considered in further activities. For now, this was another build completed in my workshop.
