LMAC Freestyle: The Sunflowers are Watching You

Today, I want to share my collage that plays with a very specific, unsettling psychological concept, the illusion of innocence.

Horror doesn’t always have to use dark colors to be scary. Sometimes, the brightest things hold the most terrifying mysteries.

At first glance, this piece looks vibrant, bright, and full of life. But if you look a bit closer, or stare at it for too long, you might start to feel a lingering sense of dread.

Even though it has a bright and colorful vibe, this looks incredibly creepy to me. If I were a child, or if I stared at this image for too long, it would genuinely terrify me.

As children, we are taught that bright colors, smiling faces, flowers, and little bees mean safety and happiness. But our childhood imaginations also have a dark side. Seeing human-like, static facial features where they don't belong, especially those wide, empty, staring eyes and unmoving smiles, creates what psychologists call the uncanny valley.

With this, I wanted to capture that exact nightmare. It’s the kind of hidden terror a child might feel when looking at a colorful picture book that feels just a little bit off. The sunflowers look like they are putting on a cheerful mask, but their giant, hollow eyes tell a completely different story. They are watching you, smiling silently, and they won't look away.

This imagery connects deeply with my own childhood fears of things being out of place, much like how I used to be terrified of Monkey Masks. It’s that same chilling question a child asks themselves, why is it looking at me like that? What is hidden behind that smile?

The contrast between the beautiful, blue sky, the fluffy white clouds, and these eerie living entities creates a surreal dreamscape that quickly distorts into a quiet, beautiful nightmare.
