Electronics equipment shelf - DIY with 3D Print

As you know, I love DIY, particularly the electronics side of DIY. I have a lot of (old) machines: an oscilloscope, a stabilized power unit, a soldering station, ...

And now, I'm in a lack of space on my workspace. That's why I search something to "compress" my space. And after a little time on Printables (the best site to find 3D printed models), I found something really great : the SHELFIE !

​What is SHELFIE ?

This is a small 3d printed ecosystem of connectors to build any furniture you want. You can find many example on the SHELFIE page. It's totally free for your personal use. The author give us the OpenSCAD file to adapt the connectors to any size, thickness, and many more parameters.

It's for me and my needs so I download the file, and start the construction of my mini-shelfie!

Bills of materials

To do this small shelf, you need:

Before / After the paint

  • 12mm MDF wood (because i already have it but you can use anything you want, just verify the thickness with your prints)

  • 3D printer & filament

  • A saw

  • some self-drilling screws (optional)

About wood, I need 4 pieces of 30x20cm panels and 2 pieces of 30x40cm panels. I paint them black (with a cheap acrylic paint).

3D print the connectors

For this project, I only need 4 T pieces and 8 L pieces. If you want to build something with SHELFIE, don't forget to know your needs before print! It can be frustrating when you start to build (Yes, I forgot a T piece...). I choose Orange to have a great contrast with my black painted wood.

Also, keep in my it must be durable. Here is my settings:

  • 4 walls

  • Honeycomb infill

  • 50% infill minimum (I use 50% for the top pieces, and 65% for the others)

Before print, add a small tolerance on your OpenSCAD file. Example: for my 12mm MDF sheet, I use a 12.2 thickness. Without that, you cannot place your piece of wood inside the connector.

Assembly & result

It's time to connect all the stuff! As you can see on the photos, it's very easy to build.

I don't use screw because I don't have weight on my wood and the shelf will not move. If you build a bigger shelf or if you store weighted stuff, please use screw to add some strength.
