Meaningful bracelets, my most special project
Have a great weekend, my dear creative friends. I hope you’re all doing well and staying healthy and happy, surrounded by your loved ones.
July almost slipped by without me telling you that, just like every year since my mom left this world, July has become the month when I prepare the most personal and special project I create with my own hands.
September 14 will mark four years since she passed away, and ever since then, I’ve wanted to honor her memory in the best way I know how: by creating. It’s my way of remembering her, of thanking her for everything she taught me, and of feeling that, in some way, she continues to be with me in every stitch, every thread, and now, every bead as well.
The first year, I embroidered some embroidery hoops. It was my way of paying tribute to her through the art she taught me when I was a child, never imagining that many years later, that same embroidery would become my refuge during the saddest time of my life.
The second year, I crocheted some little granny square-shaped pouches to hold rosaries. She also taught me how to crochet, so every stitch held a little piece of those shared memories that I cherish so dearly today.
In my third year, I made some “saberes” pendants—another simple yet deeply meaningful token for those who joined us in praying for the eternal rest of his soul.
And as long as God allows, I will continue to prepare these little mementos that we hand out during the Mass in his memory. More than just a gift, they are a way to express our gratitude for the company of those who join us that day and, at the same time, to keep his memory alive.
This year I wanted to step away from thread for a bit and explore something different. I decided to try my hand at making jewelry and created some very simple bracelets with deep spiritual meaning. I chose some small mother-of-pearl crosses and paired them with three gold beads representing the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I liked the idea that, in addition to being a lovely keepsake, each person could wear a small symbol of faith on their wrist.
Materials
To make these bracelets, I used:
• Mother-of-pearl crosses.
• 4 mm Murano beads in white, black, gray, and beige.
• Three gold beads for each bracelet.
• Elastic cord.
• Jewelry-cutting pliers (though that was really the only tool I needed).
Step by Step
The truth is, they’re very easy to make and don’t require any prior experience.
First, I cut a length of elastic cord, leaving a little extra so I could work comfortably. Then I began stringing the Murano beads.
When I reached the center, I placed the mother-of-pearl cross so it would be the focal point of the bracelet. On either side of the cross, I added a gold bead and continued with the same sequence of Murano beads until the bracelet reached the desired size.
Paso a paso
When she was finished, she tied a tight knot to close the bracelet and hid the knot with one last gold bead. That small detail makes the finish look much cleaner and more delicate.
And so, one by one, they took shape.
While I was making them, I couldn’t help but think of my mom. These little bracelets aren’t just an accessory; they’re filled with love, gratitude, memories, and a prayer.
Once again, July comes to a close with this project that’s so special to my heart. And although I miss my mom terribly, I’m also grateful that everything she taught me lives on in my hands. Every year I find a different way to honor her memory, and as long as God grants me life, I’ll continue to lovingly craft these little keepsakes to share with those who join us in remembering her.
