Borrowing Smart, Living Free
It is really stressful it is for me to owe anyone, I'm talking very minimal peace of mind.
I remember back in Uni, I borrowed a very small amount of money to take care of some personal business which my allowance didn’t cover. When I tell you there wasn’t a day that went by without me thinking about this debt, I mean it. Every single day for the one week it took me to pay it back, it weighed heavily on my mind.
People borrow for different reasons. Could be anything from starting a business, to bailing a cousin from jail, or in popular cases to throw a party. But, mostly for sustenance, and there’s really no judgment in that. However, my dad used to tell us, “He who goes a-borrowing, goes a-sorrowing.” While that’s not true in all cases, I completely understand where he was coming from. As kids, it's important for us to learn that while borrowing might seem harmless and serve as a quick fix, it could lead to some tension and regret later.
Here’s what I think: there is absolutely nothing wrong with borrowing money to take care of something, provided you are going to pay it back. For instance, being a Defi babe means I may not always be liquid when cash is needed, and liquidating could be a bad move at the time. So, I go to a friend, borrow some money, and pay it back promptly when the time is due.
The only terrible thing about borrowing is not paying back. It really, really sucks. While it’s not always intentional, it can put the lender in a very difficult position, create drama, and smear the relationship.
So, what’s the lesson here? Borrowing isn’t inherently bad—it’s a tool to solve immediate problems when managed wisely. However, integrity is everything. If you borrow, do your absolute best to pay it back as agreed. It builds trust, preserves relationships, and is a big evidence of Financial Maturity. After all, life is already hard enough without the mental burden of unpaid debts or strained friendships.
