Probably One Of The Most Unique Toilet Experience I had

This is actually a throwback to August 2023, when I did my solo travel to Chiang Mai, Thailand—a famous tourist destination known for its nature, culture, culinary scene, and aesthetic cafés. You might be wondering why and what do I mean by the “toilet experience.” Is it something related to the toilet high-tech features? No, it doesn’t have any advanced technology like the toilets in Japan. The features are just like any ordinary toilet in general. But…one thing that made me want to stay as long as I can, even though some people come just to take photo/video..., is the glass aquarium wall in the toilet, complete with real koi fish! Really? Yes, it is ! The place actually went viral because of this, and it was the very thing that caught my attention and made me want to visit and experience it by myself.

The place is called Carp Cafe. It is located a bit outside of town but is definitely worth visiting. Once I arrived, I was immediately welcomed by its aesthetic entrance—a Japanese-style tiny bridge, complete with an artificial cherry blossom tree and a koi fish pond underneath. The water mist spray installed alongside the bridge instantly creates a “zen” vibe as you walk in.

After passing the entrance, you will immediately discover the first attractive feature of this café: dining in the koi fish pond. There are several seating areas arranged like small islands in the pond, where you can sit and enjoy dining surrounded by water and koi fish. It is perfect for families, couples, or groups looking for a fun, romantic, or relaxing experience. If you do not wish to sit at those tables, there are also regular seating areas located on the side of the pool.

I then took a seat and ordered a drink. While waiting for it, I immediately headed to the most unique and attractive spot in this café—"the aquarium wall toilet !" Yes, I couldn’t wait to see and experience it by myself.

I entered the toilet and was amazed by what I saw with my own eyes. There was a huge, full-size aquarium built into the wall, with real koi swimming inside. It looked unreal, but it was the real thing. You can actually “do your things” in the toilet while being accompanied by a group of koi swimming on the wall, almost like they’re watching you. It felt a bit weird, but chill at the same time. At least it’s better than staring at a plain wall.

Actually, the café offers more than just its unique toilet. The Japanese garden theme used by the café creates a cozy, chill, and peaceful ambience for visitors to enjoy. You can even feed the koi by purchasing fish food at the counter. As for the drinks and food, I don’t have much to comment on, as I only had a warm matcha milk which was quite good. I didn’t get a chance to try the food or other menus. However, they offer a wide range of options, including Japanese and Thai dishes, along with desserts and drinks. The price range is mid to high, so make sure to prepare enough budget if you plan to dine here.

If you get a chance to visit Chiang Mai, I do strongly recommend this place for great experience. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy with family, with couple, in a group, or even if you’re visiting solo like I did. All are welcome—just make sure to have fun and try the “unique spot” :-)
