Install Windows on HP P4500 G2

Introduction

The HP P4500 G2 Storage Systems server is also equivalent to an HP ProLiant SE1220 and HP ProLiant DL180 G6. I wanted to install an operating system other than the StoreVirtual OS.

When booting the server with Windows Server installation media, it is unable to see the disks due to a driver missing.

I was trying to install the operating system using iLO and found that my F keys (F1, F2, etc.) and arrow keys weren't working. To fix this I had to add the iLO IP address to the trusted zone and compatibility mode in IE.

To get the OS installed I had to get an HP SmartStart CD. I was able to get smartstart-8.70B-0-x64 from: https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_2e6c41afdb8c4c0d9bffce484c

You can use this disk to set up your RAID arrays.

It supports installation of the following operating systems:

HP Branded Media

  • Microsoft Windows 2003 x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 R2 x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2008 x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 (x64)
  • Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 x64 Edition

Retail Media

  • Microsoft Windows 2003 x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 R2 x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2008 x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 (x64)
  • Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 x64 Edition

I opted to install Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 (x64). After the OS was installed I updated it to SP1 by downloading from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5842

To extract the files from the .iso I installed 7zip from https://www.7-zip.org

I then updated IE to 11 by downloading https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=40901
