Hi, dear Hivers

For some months now I have been training to participate in the United Nations Model Youth Summit.

This is an increíble opportunity for HS students to experience the kind of demanding leadership situations national delegations face in international scenarios.

UN models are micro UN assemblies where studetns get the chance to play the roles of country delegations that discuss current issues.

My school (Loyola Gumilla) is one of the few in the country that organizes local UN events to then move on to national and international competitions. Other schools that will participate from my region are: Ibero,Los Proceres, Nazareth and Monte Carmelo.

SINUGUA was the local simulacrum in my region (Guayana).
We had a General Assembly Commitee, constututed by 35 pairs of students and Security Council, which had 22 students.

The Security Council had to discuss Middle East issues.

Even though participating in this event is an academic distinction, it has not been easy. I am a senior HS students and the last year is the most stressful one. On top of that, I am part of a volley ball league and I also have to prepare for the university admission test.

We had to sort out all kinds of logístics difficulties, pay a few fees, and juggle with housework and homework.

The simulacrfum condenses in one day what would take three or more in a regular model event. It involves draft projects and projects on given topics.

My partner and I were the delegation representing China. We had to discuss the international response to children's kidnapping and exploitation. We had to do a lot of research about it to play the role of the Chinese delegation on that topic.

We started at 8 am and finished at about 4 pm
This was the first event since the pandemia. We had to learn a lot of the formal rules, procedures, diplomatic language and norms, etc. Everyone was very nervous.

Even the organizers messed up with the list of orators, for instance. We were supposed to speak on the first round, but were were excluded.

We had to improvise, negociate, and respond to surprise crises.

Despite the nerves and exhausting agenda, we did very well.

At the end of the simulacrum we were distinguished with an honorable mention for our performance.

We could not be happier!

Here's the diploma

I was very happy because my mom was able to be with me all day.
She has always supported me and that helps a lot, especially in environments so demanding like this. We have a better idea of what the real event will be like, but there is still a lot to work on.

We have had some meetings after the simulacrum to prepare for the next event in Caracas. The topic will be different; I will be representing a different country and a different institution, so we have to start from scratch.
