When Every Attack Hurts: A Thrilling Draw in Splinterlands!
Today I played one of the most interesting battles I've had in Splinterlands Modern Ranked. It wasn't a victory or a defeat—it ended in a draw, proving that the right rulesets can completely change the outcome of a battle.
The match featured two challenging rulesets:
- Reverse Speed – Slower monsters attack first and have a better chance to evade attacks.
- Briar Patch – Every monster gains Thorns, returning 2 damage to melee attackers.
These rules forced both players to rethink their usual strategies. Speed became a disadvantage, while every melee attack came with a painful price.
My Team
1- Doomshield Warden (Tank)
- Flank
- Thorns (from ruleset)
2- Grimbardun Fighter
- Shield
- Corrosive Ward
- Thorns
Opponent's Team
1- Codex Sage
- Void Armor
- Thorns
- Untrainable
2- Spellmonger
- Thorns
- Untrainable
3- Mindless Thrall
- Phase
- Thorns
4- Pixie-Knife Hurler
- Close Range
- Dodge
- Thorns
The Battle
- Every melee attack triggered 2 Thorns damage.
- My Grimbardun Fighter reduced melee damage with Shield, but still took unavoidable Thorns.
- The opponent had Void Armor on Codex Sage, making magic less effective.
- Reverse Speed changed the attack order, allowing slower units to act first.
- Eventually, both sides were eliminated by a combination of direct attacks and reflected Thorns damage, producing a draw.
Lessons Learned
- Slow monsters become valuable in Reverse Speed battles.
- Briar Patch heavily punishes melee-heavy teams.
- Defensive abilities like Shield and Void Armor can greatly increase survivability.
- Sometimes the best strategy still results in a draw—and that's part of what makes Splinterlands so exciting.
