1856 Slanted 5 G$1
1856 Slanted 5 G$1
Another coin from my buddy Chris over at longislandcoin on Instagram. He is a solid dude with a word of knowledge who I speak with almost every day.
This is my second G$1 coin and currently my only. I sold the first one to a friend of mine who was looking for a gift for his father-in-law so he asked if I had anything. It took me a few months to find a replacement but I think I did, well until I sell it, but itβs a pretty cool coin.
The 1856 G$1 has a mintage of 1,762,936 but with varieties such as the "Slanted 5" and "Upright 5" it's hard to get an accurate count on how many of each variety exist.
This is one of the three or four most common of all Type III gold dollars. As the data clearly indicates, however, most specimens offered are well worn, and although uncirculated pieces are available, they are offered with less frequency than one might suspect. In choice condition, this date is much rarer than any of the dates in the 1880's for example.
The data shows that there were 85 appearances of the 1856 gold dollar with Upright 5, and 169 of the 1856 Slanting 5. This, of course, would seem to indicate that the Upright 5 variety is only about twice as rare as the Slanting 5 variety. This ratio does not match my own experience, however, and I would estimate that the Upright 5 variety is more likely five to ten times as rare.
I hope you all enjoy this coin as much as I do... Cheers π»
