Las repercusiones de que piratearan mi libro [ENG/ESP]

Hace años, en 2013 para ser exactos, escribí una historia en Wattpad. Se llama "La niñera de la mafia".

Ok, no es mi historia favorita.

En realidad, por aquellos años buscaba aprender del oficio de escribir, que me reconocieran un poco, pero no más de eso.

Para mi sorpresa, fue muy exitosa en la plataforma. Al día de hoy, acumula 1.8 Millones de lecturas en Wattpad. Estuvo entre los primeros lugares de la categoría de misterio por años y...

No es que esté muy orgullosa de ella. Fue algo que escribí estando muy joven. Pero, es comercial y a la gente le gusta.

Hello, Hive friends. Today I'm here to vent about an issue that is important to me. I'm very upset about something I realized today.

Years ago, in 2013 I wrote a story on Wattpad. It's called "The Mob Babysitter." Ok, it's not my favorite story. Actually, back in those years I was looking to learn of the craft of writing, to be recognized a bit, but no more than that.

To my surprise, it was very successful on the platform. As of today, it accumulates 1.8 million reads on Wattpad. It was among the top spots in the mystery category for years and....

Not that I'm very proud of it. It was something I wrote when I was very young. But, it's commercial and people like it.

Así pasaron los años. Yo estudié periodismo. Me gradué. Aprendí muchísimo sobre escritura. Me pulí y sentía aversión cada vez que alguien me identificaba como la autora de 'La niñera de la mafia', porque sí, me identificaban en la calle cuando decía mi nombre.

Me daba vergüenza los errores que tenía y lo cliché de la historia. Decía: "Dios mío, la gente va a pensar que soy una escritora horrible".

Hasta que... En 2021 me contactó una editorial. Querían los derechos de distribución del libro por un monto que no puedo poner. Y la verdad, el libro estaba ahí, llevaba 7 años sin generarme nada más que vergüenza y yo necesitaba dinero...

De modo que...

Acepté. Le di los derechos Dreame y obtuve mi dinero.

Con eso pagué una buena parte de los costos de ¡OH SORPRESA, TENEMOS COVID! y lo dejé estar ahí. No presté más atención a los ingresos. Porque tenía mi adelanto y la plataforma lo iba a descontar por un tiempo de todo lo que entrara.

No me interesaba demasiado hasta que hoy en la mañana, procrastinando, sentí curiosidad por lo que había ocurrido con eso.

Así que busqué 'La niñera de la mafia' en Google y ¡PUM!

And so the years went by. I studied journalism. I graduated. I learned a lot about writing. I polished myself and felt aversion every time someone identified me as the author of '*The Mafia's Nanny*', because yes, I was identified in the street when I said my name.

I was ashamed of the mistakes I had and how cliché the story was. I was like, "Oh my God, people are going to think I'm a horrible writer."

Until... In 2021 I was contacted by a publisher. They wanted the distribution rights to the book for an amount I can't put my finger on. And the truth, the book was there, it had been there for 7 years without generating me anything but embarrassment and I needed money....

So...

I accepted. I gave Dreame the rights and I got my money.

With that I paid a good part of the costs of OH SURPRISE, WE HAVE COVID! and I let him be there. I didn't pay any more attention to the income. Because I had my advance and the platform was going to deduct it for a while from everything that came in.

I wasn't too interested until today morning, procrastinating, I was curious about what had happened with that.

So I googled 'mob babysitter' and WHAM!

Mi libro está pirateado por toda la gran, hermosa y extensa internet... O sea, alguien agarró el libro publicado legalmente en Dreame, luego de que yo firmara el contrato y retirara la historia casi en su totalidad de Wattpad. Y, con la copia de Dreame, la puso en un PDF descargable en internet.

¿Y qué puedo hacer al respecto? Tengo mucha impotencia, no por el valor sentimental que pueda darle.

Sino porque, a la larga lo veía como una forma de generar ingresos, luego de que la plataforma se descontara lo suyo. Era mi plan a largo plazo, pero ¿Cómo puedo detener al monstruo de la piratería?

El libro estuvo gratis por 7 años. Yo quería sacarle algo más que reconocimiento por su cantidad de seguidores.

¿Y quién va a comprar algo que está gratis con una simple búsqueda? Nadie. De hecho, entré y solo he acumulado, desde agosto hasta hoy, 0.50$.

Solo porque alguien hizo un PDF. Un PDF de un libro que pasó años gratis.

Un PDF que arruinó mis años de vergüenza por las existencia del libro.

Mis noches escribiéndolo, cuando me creía genial y la mejor de Wattpad.

Solo me queda soltar la impotencia y, por lo menos agradecer que aparezco como autora.

And what can I do about it? I have a lot of helplessness, not because of the sentimental value I might place on it.

But because, in the long run I saw it as a way to generate income, after the platform discounted its own. It was my long-term plan, but how do I stop the piracy monster?

The book was free for 7 years. I wanted to get more out of it than just recognition for its number of followers.

And who's going to buy something that's free with a simple search? No one. In fact, I went in and have only accumulated, from August to today, $0.50.

Just because someone made a PDF. A PDF of a book that spent years for free.

A PDF that ruined my years of embarrassment over the book's existence.

My nights writing it, when I thought I was cool and the best on Wattpad.

I can only let go of my helplessness and at least be thankful that I'm listed as an author.
