No buscaría venganzas, no buscaría gloria.

alt

If I had in my hands that marvellous lamp from the stories of my childhood, I wouldn’t ask for treasures, or crowns, or the gift of immortality. My wish would be much louder and, at the same time, much quieter: I would ask for the squeak of a VHS tape rewinding at full speed. I would ask for the calendar of my life to be turned backwards, skipping over the grey hairs and the scars, until it came to a sudden halt on a cloudy Tuesday: 12 December 1994.

alt

In the Realm of the Possible, I am not here writing these lines weighed down by the present. In that realm, I am an adult walking the streets of Tovar, in the state of Mérida where the cold seeps into your bones but is warmed by the smell of coffee and pan de tunja. It is the eve of Saint Lucy’s Day. Venezuela smells of Maracaibo 15 gaitas playing on transistor radios and the hustle and bustle typical of a December which, until that moment, seemed just another in the long line of years.

A ticket back to 1994...

I close my eyes and the miracle happens. I am there. I can feel the texture of the damp tarmac beneath my feet. I see the blue and white uniforms, the comings and goings of the students from La Presentación School. The air has that Andean quality, laden with mist that descends from the hills like a protective cloak... or like a warning that no one knew how to read... Not me, either.

My mission on this journey into the past is simple, yet monumental: to save a life. If I could step back into that 12th of December with the awareness I have today, I would become a protective shadow. I would seek neither revenge nor glory. I would simply seek the exact moment to alter the course of that person’s steps...

alt

I see her in the distance, her youth intact, oblivious to the shadow that 13 December would cast over her name and mine. In this exercise in creative non-fiction, I approach her timidly. Not to tell her about the future, because the future is a monster that no one wants to know about before its time, but to stand in the way of tragedy. Perhaps a distraction would suffice—a trivial conversation, a five-minute delay on her watch, a change of route brought about by a chance encounter. In the Realm of the Possible, I have the power to be the blessed obstacle that prevents her from reaching that place, that moment when darkness swallowed everything.

I know that changing the past is like playing at being God. As the writer Jorge Luis Borges so aptly puts it in his poem Chess: “God moves the player, and the player moves the piece. / What God behind God begins this plot / of dust and time and dreams and agonies?”. Altering that day would mean that my own life, as I know it today—with its condemnations, its judgements and its shipwrecks—would cease to exist. But at this “Talent Gathering”, where we are allowed to dream of the impossible, I accept the deal without hesitation. Let my present vanish, let my story be different, as long as she can see the dawn of 14 December.

alt

In my mind, the film pauses. 12 December 1994 stretches on endlessly. I see that young woman returning home. I see her family having dinner in peace. I see the Christmas decorations of that Tovar of the nineties shining with a light that will not go out the next day. There are no painful newspaper headlines, no court cases tearing families apart, no prison cells or loneliness. There is only a young woman growing up, celebrating her birthday, who perhaps today would be a woman with children and dreams fulfilled.

They tell me to be realistic, that the past is a block of concrete. But in literature and in faith, the past is clay. In writing this, I am rescuing that desire from the depths of my soul. Returning to that time is more than an act of selfishness; it is the supreme longing for redemption. It is wanting to say to fate: “You are wrong; no one should die here”.

alt

If the genie from Aladdin’s lamp were to ask me, “Are you sure? Your life will change completely,” I would simply show him my empty hands, ready to be filled with the peace of knowing that she is safe. It is the most beautiful wish of all, the one that restores light where darkness has taken hold by force.

This piece is a response to the talentos@talentos initiative: Talent Gathering – The Realm of the Possible. Thank you for giving me the chance to get things off my chest.
